What happens at the assessment?

The clinic is held at the St Patrick's Dean Clinic on Capel Street. The assessment is formed of two parts.

  1. You will be assessed using some cognitive tests to assess various aspects of mental functioning.
  2. You and (where appropriate) a member of your family, or someone who knows you very well, will be interviewed about both your childhood development and your current situation Both parts of the assessment will last up to 2- 3 hours each and therefore it is important to be aware that the whole assessment usually takes up most of the day.

In order to complete our assessment we will need to know about the following:

  • Your personal history - this includes events around your birth, when you first learned to walk, talk and your childhood play and relationships.
  • Your school and work history - this includes information about your schooling, further education and employment. Please bring along any old school reports or relevant information if you have them.
  • Your medical history and prescribed medications.

When all the information has been gathered, will discuss the assessment with you and also issues concerning your future care. Please feel free to ask questions if you do not understand anything, as it is sometimes difficult to take everything in on one occasion.
