Dual Diagnosis

The Dual Mood and Addiction Programme, or Dual Diagnosis programme was established in St. Patrick's University Hospital in 2002. It caters for people with anaddiction, often alcohol dependence who also experience a mood problem such asdepression or bipolar disorder. It also caters for those who have other addictions including cannabis and tranquilliser abuse and other mental health problems such as anxiety disorders.

The programme grew from the need to cater for people with both addiction and mood problems in a comprehensive and thorough way rather than deal with them separately. The Dual Diagnosis team consists of a Consultant Psychiatrist, a Registrar, Nursing Staff, Counsellors, Social Workers, Psychologists and Occupational therapists. We believe in continued improvement of the programme and have initiated a full research programme to assess and develop the current programme.
